Michel Sittow - Catherine of Aragon (1504)
A native of Estonia, Sittow’s years in Bruges as a student of Memling gained him the nickname ‘Mychel Flamenco’, or Michel the Fleming.
an artist somewhat like Van Dyck in a later epoch; a brilliant painter of religious subjects, but of outstanding qualities as a portrait painter. His portraits are among the finest of their time, vivid, candid, crisply elegant and reserved.
